Frithioff Johansen
Painter, sculptor and multimedia artist born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1939.
Working fields
Apart from his engagement with more traditional techniques as painting and sculpture, he has worked with large scale sculptural installations using light and lasers as well as producing individual holographic objects.
Monumental works
Modern technology has been involved in most of his monumental works such as lasers holography, fibre optics, LED lighting and CAD design.
The most well known works are Chaos Temple in Holstebro (his magnum opus and newly renovated in 2010), Sfirot in Billund, Kind of Entropy in Flakkebjerg, The installation 'Reflection, Transmission, Projection' for The Danish Arts foundation, 'The Virtual A' in Kolding and 'VD' a sculpture in Skanderborg for The Danish Road Directorate.
Grants etc.
Among several awards he has received: The Three-year grant from The Danish Arts Foundation, travel grant from The Danish National Bank, grant from The Augustinus Foundation, Artist in Residence, Museum of Holography, New York, The Shearwater Foundation Award for creative holography, USA, Grant of Honour from The Aage & Yelva Nimb Foundation, The Eckersberg Medal from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Appointed as member of The Danish Arts Foundation 1999-2001.
2004 Awarded The lifelong artists´ grant from The Danish Arts Foundation
Other projects
Held an optical patent together with colleage artist Henrik Boëtius until econony gave up. With H.B. he has created the concept of light sculpture "Virtual Cross", which is based on the patented technique .
